Good atheists and bad atheists

Good Atheists:
Gene Roddenberry, George Bernard Shaw, Freidrich Nietzsche, Frank Zappa, Carl Sagan, Arthur C. Clark, Me!

Bad Atheists:
Adolph Hitler, Pol Pot, Joseph Stalin, this guy I know named Ken, and... Larry Darby

Who is Larry Darby? A self-professed atheist, Holocaust denier, and possible white supremacist that unsuccessfully ran for Alabama Attorney General in a Democratic primary a few days ago. Darby got 40% of the vote. I don’t’ want to go into how screwed up it is to have 40% of voting Alabama Democrats casting votes in favor of a deranged nutball like Darby. It boggles my mind. I want to talk about his Libertarian connection instead. When I first heard this story, I thought he must be a Libertarian. No real political party would let someone like Darby run for office. Libertarians on the other hand, they let anybody run for office. All you need do is fill out the necessary forms. Ferret rights – no problem, legalize prostitution and heroin use – no problem. Any position that even remotely sounds like a libertarian argument is fully endorsed. Darby would have fit right in. In fact he did. He left the Libertarian party to “save it from itself”.

Democrats tried to stop Darby. By the time they discovered his true colors it was too late. Darby was past the point of no return. Libertarians have been silent on this. For the most part, so have atheists. I am an atheist and a libertarian. Darby pisses me off, so does anybody who voted for him. Darby actually wants to shoot illegal aliens on sight. What the hell does an illegal alien look like these days? Darby should be riding the pine in a mental institute.

Just for the record, the libertarian position on immigration is to open the borders. Immigrants, both illegal and legal, fuel our economy. Fencing in the border, sending illegal immigrants home, or “shooting them at the border” as Darby suggests, would kill our economy. Not to mention the fact that these immigrants are people, treating them like cattle would violate every ethical standard that America stands for.

My family is five generations off the boat. I am a descendant of Irish immigrants. My wife is a first generation immigrant. Darby’s ex-wife is a Chinese immigrant, how do you spell hypocrisy? Apparently, you spell it Larry Darby.

What about all those becoming atheists, but incompletely, since they retain in their minds the residue of that religion without being aware of it?
They emancipate themselves from belief in overtly supernatural beings and reject tales about such impossible events as virgin births, walking on water, resurrection of the dead, but they never ponder the equally absurd social superstitions that were authorized by, and depend on, the god whose existence the tales about impossible events were devised to prove!

Those would-be atheists retain so much of a residue of Christianity in their minds that they are apt to flop over into leftist liberalism. It dispenses with gods but retains all of the religion they think they are rejecting.
In place of traditional Christianity, they adopt an ersatz Christianity and, forgetting their atheism, have an emotional and unreasoning faith in their new religion with its millenarian belief in a future of happiness and justice where all give according to their ability and receive according to their needs [Acts 4:35],

Their revolt against Western civilization differs in only a few unessential trimmings from the subversion practised as "social gospel" in the great majority of Christian churches today.
They retain in their minds the Christian residue that makes them susceptible to drivel about "all mankind," "One World," and the "humanitarian" sentimentality of do-gooders.
So many of the Liberal's political ideas are religious at root - a secular, political extension of traditional religious frameworks. The search for equality in the secular sense is a replacement of the Judaeo-Christian idea that God loves every individual equally.

Universalist religionists and Marxists and most Humanists have a religious conviction that poetic metaphors such as "the brotherhood of Man" in which "there is neither Greek nor Roman, Jew nor Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, we are all one in Christ Jesus", are to be taken and used literally. They are unwitting functionaries in the creation of a New World Order of mixed-up peoples and centralized power.

The future development of quality of life of the peoples of Western countries are threatened qualitatively and quantitatively by non-Western immigration, that universalist dogma welcomes and the globalist establishment and its media bars warning against.

Our confidence in secular "truths" should be suspect because they arose in connection with the concept of God! For Hegel, the French Revolution - with its 'liberty, equality, fraternity' triad - was the political realization of an ideal that first took form in religious imagination. Political developments in this way are the concrete expression of religious ideals. The Enlightenment was not a break with religion; its secular movement was the realization of a vision that in the past had been located in a transcendent realm and postponed for an afterlife.

Yet another person who lacks the will to find the facts. You claim Hitler is an atheist. If you bother to research your claims you will easily discover Hitler was a Christian. Many of his speeches claimed his faithfullness to the religion of Christianity. Hitler was doing his God's work, when you compare the Christian God and Hitler morally, Hitler is a much better being.

Dear lonny the halfwit poster - Was Hitler an Atheist or a Theist? More Importantly, Who Cares?

Hitler claimed to be Christian, ya whatever, we all know this.

He was also a follower of the will to power existentialist movement, which is atheist.

He was also a monster the usurped the power of the church in Germany and replaced with a state religion of his own racial design, not exactly the action of a Christian.

Lastly - judge a man by his words. History shows us Hitler was no Christian.

oh - and next time lonny, post your inane rants someplace else.

I have to say, Mojoey, this is quite a brilliant response. Not many atheists are willing to own up to the fact that Hitler was an atheist. Jimmy Wales is also an atheist, and he seems like a cool guy. But none of this matters. Too often people pretend that a certain point of view is "good" or "bad" based on the actions of those who hold it. Atheism is a point of view, my point of view, and I feel no need to pretend everyone I share it with has been perfect. So while I must say that sometimes your blog runs a little close to what I would call "atheist fundamentalism," I think you are a very clear-headed individual. Furthermore, I would love to see you expand this list and explain why you think Nietzsche was a "good atheist." Not because I think he wasn't, but because I would like to hear your reasoning, as I believe you are an intelligent individual.

"Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord." -Adolf Hitler in Mein Kampf

My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God's truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. ...Today, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed his blood upon the Cross. ...
- Adolf Hitler, speech on April 12, 1922
I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so." - Hitler to General Gerhard Engel, 1941
Today Christians ... stand at the head of [this country]... I pledge that I never will tie myself to parties who want to destroy Christianity .. We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit ... We want to burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the theater, and in the press - in short, we want to burn out the poison of immorality which has entered into our whole life and culture as a result of liberal excess during the past ... (few) years.
- Adolf Hitler, quoted in: The Speeches of Adolf Hitler, 1922-1939, Vol. 1 (London, Oxford University Press, 1942), pg. 871-872

Larry Darby isn't an atheist either.

Darby found far more sympathy for his racist and anti-Semitic views among Christians and he has since converted to Christianity where he is promoting a fanatical religious perspective to go with his White Supremacist perspective.

"Remember when America was identified as a land of, and for, descendents of European Christians? Remember when teachings in American Sunday Schools were consistent with that fact?"

"The heritage of the posterity of the Framers of the Republic largely has been obliterated because of moderation. Christianity has been replaced with Churchianity that follows not Christ, but the politically correct doctrine of moderation. ...Abandon moderation and reclaim that old-time religion of our forefathers."
