Nutball alert: a broken fish

I happened upon a fundie blog today. He (or she) was bemoaning the vandalism of their sacred Christian fish symbol. Somebody broke a fin off his little plastic symbol of oppression. I almost passed on reading this entry. It seemed so trivial.

We have had this Christian fish symbol on the back of our car for a couple of years.  Recently, when our car was in a shopping center parking lot, someone broke off a part of the symbol.   You might think that this small act of vandalism is meaningless;  I don’t.

Of course, the obvious answer is that no crime was committed. It seems reasonable that the fin could have broken off for natural reasons. In fact, it seemed like  a metaphor for belief in god. Some unseen hand had touched the ichthus symbol, breaking off a fin. The driver "knew" it was the hand of a Atheist, or maybe it was a noodly appendage?

The author plunges on with a bizarre justification for the decline of America. His lack of critical thinking should have warned me off. I read on on. I'm a sucker for nutballs. I loved this gem:

Additional dozens of lawsuits have removed any symbols of the Christian faith from the public square.  Revisionist history in every school textbook in America disguises the fact that nearly all the framers of the Constitution were evangelical Christians.

Yep - good old Tomas Jefferson was an evangelical. You heard it hear first. If any of you feel inclined, please pay our poor fundie a visit. He needs so help with his history.

Yes, vandalizing would be bad.

On the other hand, little magnetic Darwin fish feet could be incredibly useful...

After reading this person's rant, I couldn't help but be reminded of a scene straight out of 'Adam's Rib' (1949) wherein Spencer Tracy, amazed at the powers of discernment possessed by Katharine Hepburn's posterior, asks: "What've you got back there? Radar equipment?"

Just what was in that tail?

Those little fish with extra stuff inside of them make me crazy. We get that the fish means you're a Christian, people (so long as it doesn't have legs, anyway); there's no need for the additional cross, or words like "Jesus" or "Faith" or whatever.

When I run across this sort of thing, I never know whether it is better to visit the dude's blog and attempt to question his delusion or just move on. I don't want to give him the added hits, but it is sometimes hard to pass up.

FUCK... ok ok sorry. So I went ahead and read it and the more and more I read, the dumber I feel. This guy has obviously never read anything but the "good" book. I have a wordpress account, but it will not let me log in (maybe because his is .org and mine is .com.. I don't know) Either way, I am upset because I can't respond directly to the absent minded fool. Then again, what is that old saying about having a battle of wits with an unarmed man?

I digress though, besides the obvious idiotic leaps he takes from Murder to "vandalism" (any athiest would have been more clever.. taking it all or even just putting those little feet on.) he also makes the leap that christians are being attacked and killed, or as he put it "Their killers are most often Muslim or Hindu."... WOW, I mean talk about bigotry toward other religions.. OH WAIT, is it because his is the "right" religion. Not to mention that Hindu's Killing? You have to be kidding me? The group who are just behind Buddhists in being peaceful? The people who are vegetarian? This guy is out of his fucking mind. Part of me thinks some of those christians deserve what they get because of their tactics at getting people to "convert". Don't even get me started on how evil those people are.

Next he goes into this diatribe about how the founders of our nation were not only christian, but evangelical? When the fuck did that happen? Most if not all were deists, atheists, agnostics, skeptics, freethinkers, some may have even been theists.. but Evangelical or even christian? Someone needs to buy that douche bag a history book.

Mojoey, I apologize for the rant.. I suppose this guy just hit a nerve.

I wrote my own blog about it.

A truely unhappy individual with a persecution complex. He lives in the richest country in the World, has probably never had to go hungry. Sometimes I feel it would be nice for these people to experience true persecution to really have to defend their faith with their own life.

Whinging nutball. Talk about crying over spilt milk.

I feel like taking a baseball bat to the back of the car and giving him something to really cry about.

What happened is obvious. Jesus wanted to be represented by a fish which had part of its tail removed.

I had the same problem as Johnny Crow; I ended up writing my own response, too.

He's no more or less different to many other fundamentalists out there: never forget: they're generally against advanced education. Just be thankful that his English was reasonable! So many neglect that, as well.

I don't know why I did it, but I did... I went back to his site and read a few more post. Wow, it is not just christianity that his point of view is skewed. This guy is a true nutball. I mean, WOW! I have met some strange people in my lifetime but I have not met someone of this merit other than trying to get away from a guy in a half drunken stupor who suffers from syphilis (cause it makes your brain swiss cheese) and talking about the world. The only difference, is I can actually understand all this guys said (at least in a literal sense) and that he can actually spell and form a thought. Though I still believe he has delusions of several types... I just know I could spend a month or two just commenting on his posts.

Although the physical occurrence was not terrible, and there were flaws in the argument(Hindus for example) The basic symbolism was understandable. Christianity as a religion has been attacked. Making it an offense for children to pray in school, attempting to take 'in God we trust' out of the pledge of allegiance, and a woman being sued for placing an angel on the top of a Christmas tree in HER apartment building (meaning she owned it) Is a little extreme. Christianity is a religion that has been treated unjustly by the government in recent years, despite the fact that Christianity was the religion this nation, this government was built on. I agree that freaking out about the fish may have been over the top, but you all need to realize where this individual is coming from, despite the many flaws within the post. And Johnny Crow, your language was not appropriate or mature, no matter what point you were trying to get across. I agree, the person overreacted, but I think that we should at least try to understand where the individual is coming from, whether we continue to laugh or not. Just sayin' :-D

Some of us who hold doctorate degrees and have long histories of intense study don't need to be lectured by dimwits.

Intolerance is an ugly behavior. Obviously, the intolerance of Christians that gets a green light on this web site is justified by its participants. If we were talking about any other subgroup in America, you would all have fits about the same type of hate-speech.

Any rant on my blog is not directed at Atheists, but against intolerant anti-Christians.

All of the nitpicking examples on this site, of Christians who have screwed up, add up to a sliver of reality compared with the millions of good deeds performed by Christian people every day. Selectively picking out examples of those who are in a tiny minority distorts the facts. Many people here believe in revisionist history anyway, so it may not matter.

Through hear-say, conjecture, urban myth and hyperbole, the commenters on this site believe they understand Christianity or any of its base tenets. Ignorance is bliss.

I realize that liberal anti-Christians see themselves as the intellectual elite, but until you can explain the incredible mechanisms that exist in nature or the well-planned environment in a woman’s womb designed to nurture a baby, you can’t deny a great architect was behind it. It requires a level of ignorance to believe anything else.
